Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon (original 2001; edition 2001)by Patty LovellMolly Lou Melon is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and has a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor. She doesn't mind. Her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and she takes that advice to heart. But then Molly Lou has to start in a new school. A horrible bully picks on her on the very first day, but Molly Lou Melon knows just what to do about that. I really love children's books. I have a small collection of them and continue to buy them as an adult, because I love the magic of the words in them and the illustrations. When people say they are in a reading slump, the first advice I give is to pick up a children's book! Listened to Dolly Parton read this as part of her "Goodnight With Dolly" series. She stands out to say the least. Even though some of the kids in her new class made fun of her, she displayed all of her wonderful talents and eventually made friends with all of them. Age group 3-6 Source- Yelm library This was one of my favorite books growing up and I had forgotten about it until I was babysitting last weekend and read it to the kid. I think that this is a great story to have and pull out if the kids in my class are having some bullying issues. It is sweet, not too long, and a great lesson about how bullying isn't nice and hurts people, but also how to stand up for yourself and be ok anyways. |
