INTRODUCTION.

THE experience of some years since these Letters were first published has satisfied the Author that his principles and views therein set forth are well founded. As a Member of the Labourers' Friend Society, he has seen abundant evidence, and increasing evidence too, of the value of wellconducted labour to the poor. The opportunity given to them upon the Allotment System has produced the most beneficial effects, whereby the interests of both rich and poor are intimately united. The rich sustains not a farthing loss, and the poor averages about 2s. 6d. a week in addition to the usual wages, whatever they may be, he receives from his employer. If one hundred thousand tenants of this description all prove this one great truth, surely it is no longer possible to doubt, nor I should say to delay, its still further extension to one hundred thousand more. Not only is there no loss, as I have said, to any one, but an increased security for the rent in the increased produce of the soil in the small farm or allotment. The great secret and charm that pro
